Quick Bites: Din Tai Fung SM Megamall

There's this little Chinese restaurant located near where I lived in Gil Puyat Avenue before called Peace and Happiness Dumpling House that had me starting a love affair with xiao long bao. A dinner with a friend before going to work made me unearth this gem of a place and not too long after our initial introduction, I would order an 8-piece set for myself along with their delicious noodles. The accessibility (they deliver and they're just at the ground floor of the condo) always curbed my XLB cravings. So I guess trying out a new restaurant just solely for their xiao long bao isn't something out of the horizon for me, especially this one that claims this is the star of their menu.

When Din Tai Fung first opened its doors in Manila (specifically in SM Megamall's then very new Fashion Hall) around late 2015, the lines just wouldn't stop. I should know because I frequent the mall and was always curious about the persistent queue that always builds up in front of the resto. I really wanted to try them ASAP upon learning that they apparently have the best xiao long bao. (-̩̩̩-̩̩̩-̩̩-̩̩̩_-̩̩̩-̩-̩̩̩-̩̩̩)

Happy to report that I finally was able to dine here with Jom last week after giving in to intense cravings of XLB (and after numerous failed attempts over the past 2 year haha)! So yeah, this time around, since we arrived the moment the mall opened, there were no long lines and waiting time!

What's on the table:

Shrimp and Wonton Noodle Soup
Pork Xiao Long Bao
Steamed Shrimp and Pork Shao Mai
Golden Prawn Cake
As much as I wanted to watch through the glass window the preparations made by the kitchen staff clad in white from head to (I would assume) toe, we were famished and super excited to try the food. I think Jom's been to Din Tai Fung (or wait, was it Tim Ho Wan?) in Hong Kong already so I'm the only real newbie here.

I'm in no mood for rice that day so I opted to have the Shrimp and Wonton Noodle Soup. The serving was big (yey) but I wish the soup was more flavorful. The shrimp dumplings were seasoned right but the soup, I thought, was lacking a little bit more taste. Thankfully, it's nothing a little bit of salt and chili oil couldn't fix!

Their Pork Xiao Long Bao's delicious. (。♥‿♥。) It just had the right amount of meat inside with the gelatinous savory broth that's a burst of flavor with every bite. Please do not forget to dip it in the soy sauce + vinegar + shredded ginger combo! So so so good! They also hand you this small card that's a guide on how to properly eat and enjoy your xiao long bao.

We were surprised by the way the Steamed Shrimp and Pork Shao Mai was served. I was expecting the traditional pork siomai with chunks of shrimp in it, but this one was very xiao long bao-ish, with the shrimp tucked at the top, which totally reminded me of corals, by the way. Hahaha.

Another favorite of mine was the Golden Prawn Cake. I guess by now you've already figured out how I am such a sucker for shrimp and prawns. LOL. I think it's more of egg-based dishes. This was reminiscent of the South Korean dish, pajeon, which I really love. Not a lot of people order this since I've not seen much feedback on this dish, but this is one of those that stood out for me.

Who was the genius that came up with this concept? I just want to give them a big tight hug because this is just the best thing ever! Yep, Chocolate Xiao Long Bao, everyone. It's the best of both worlds! The combination of velvety, rich melted chocolate with the smooth dimsum wrapper is just spot on. Definitely a must try for people that can't live without their daily dose of chocolate just like me! I will absolutely come back to Din Tai Fung just for this!

This is not the last you'll see me at DTF. So much from their menu (aka xiao long bao variants) still left to try! I would also like to commend their great service. Particularly loved the bag bin that they give you so that your things wouldn't take up space on your seat or ending up on the floor. Their staff were all smiles and very accommodating.
