grub + travels + perspectives

Single Origin Rockwell

I arrived at Single Origin around 5:00 in the afternoon, surprisingly still made it on time despite the traffic, and was awed by its beautiful interiors instantly. You see, I'm not one to brave the terrible rush hour of Makati, but since this was an invite by Zomato and I was on leave that day, I figured I could spend the afternoon at the Rockwell area because it's been a while since I went to a mall like a normal person. Haha.

There's another branch at BGC which replaced The Cake Club (*sad*) which a lot of people frequent to. But compared to the High Street branch, this is bigger and has a higher ceiling. I love, love how spacious and bright the cafe looks, perfect for hanging out with family and/or friends, or just to chill or get things done on your own! Folks who love the rustic vibe will definitely be smitten with this place as the cafe's theme is a combo of bricks, wood, even glass and injected with industrial elements.

I've read from other blogs how extensive the variety of coffee they offer here, but I'm not going to be talking about that because my knowledge about coffee is so limited, I don't know how to appreciate a good cup if I was given one.

This has got to be my favorite spot! It's gives off a private feel and I could imagine myself in this little nook with my laptop to finish a month's worth of blog backlog (LOL) while enjoying a cup of coffee or my preferred cocktail! There's also natural light coming in so you need not worry about all the Instagramming you're going to do. :P

Single Origin Rockwell first opened their doors to the public last September 16, so you could say that they're still in their soft opening. The origin of the name Single Origin is very direct to the point. We asked 1/2 of the husband-wife owners, Carlo Lorenzana, on how they came up with the name. As you can see on their wall:
Single origin coffee is coffee grown within a single known geographic origin. Sometimes, this is a single farm, or a specific collection of beans from a single country.
The name of the coffee is then usually the place it was grown to whatever degree available. Single-origins are viewed by some as a way to get a specific taste, and some independent coffee shops have found that this gives them a way to add value over large chains. alternatively some people think that this is a way to artificially keep the price of coffee inflated. And now the food! We were told there was going to be about three batches of grub that will be served that afternoon. Chef Jay Saycon was also there and he was kind enough to take time to present to us their must-try dishes. ಥ‿ಥ

(L-R clockwise) Single Origin Burger (PhP 360), Bacon on Mud (PhP 195), Shrimp Po Boy (PhP 280) and Bacon Basket (PhP 195)
Drink: Mr. Woods (PhP 160)
The Single Origin Burger is wagyu burger patty served with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, with a side of truffle fries. I think it's automatic that when the meat's wagyu, quality is to be expected. And Single Origin delivered. Although simple, it was flavorful and juicy! A different twist on everybody's favorite: Bacon on Mud. Strips of crunchy maplewood bacon that you can dunk in chocolate! A bit peculiar but it works! That contrast in savory-sweet flavors ended up being great complements of each other. The third one's the Shimp Po Boy sandwich. It's deep friend shrimp tossed in honey mayo dressing on bread, served with truffle potato chips. Lastly, and my absolute favorite out of this batch is the Bacon Basket. As opposed to the usual strips of meat the word "bacon" implies, these are hefty slices of pork belly that's fried to perfection with equally perfect flavor. It's not too fatty or salty at all. Thinking and describing it here already makes my mouth water. Hahaha. Yum! The drink is called Mr. Woods, it's fresh-squeezed lemonade layered with Single Origin's organic passion berry black iced tea.

(L-R clockwise) Short Ribs Benedict (PhP 565), Crab Fat Pasta (PhP 375), Classic Corned Beef and Eggs (PhP 395), and White Truffle Pasta (PhP 450)

The White Truffle Pasta! You must try it. ♡\( ̄▽ ̄)/♡ It was my favorite dish (I think more than the Bacon Basket) because it definitely hits all the right spot on my palate. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the truffle oil taste was evident, it was creamy and light and scrumptious. And those Parmesan cheese shavings were a perfect salty touch!

Strawberry Cream Cheese French Toast (PhP 350)
S.O. French Toast (PhP 285), Mixed Berry Pancakes (PhP 375) and Strawberry Cream Cheese Waffles (PhP 375)
And of course, no food trip is complete without something sweet to finish it! And for this one, we had breakfast for dessert! I capped off this foodie meetup with these Instagram-worthy, fluffy treats while sipping on a cup of Cafe Latte.

The Strawberry Cream Cheese French Toast (which we're all ridiculously excited about) is cubes of Brioche (they make their own) topped with strawberry slices, whipped cream cheese and drizzled with Vermont maple syrup. Yep, tastes as good as it looks!

More carbs! I also enjoyed their Mixed Berry Pancakes, which are half an in inch thick and 8-inch wide flapjacks with blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, cream cheese and maple syrup! Very fluffy, fruity, and light but eventually gave up on it because three layers of goodness!

Overall verdict? I enjoyed dining here at Single Origin. Within the first few seconds after being seated, I was already messaging a couple of my friends, sending them photos of the place, telling them we should go there next time to eat and chill! Kudos to the wonderful staff! They were very warm and accommodating. To Chef Jay as well for the amazing dishes that we got to sample. Nothing was short of expectation starting from the appetizers up to the coffee. I also love and appreciate the presentation of the food. Definitely looking forward to my next visit!
