When we went to SM Aura a couple of weeks back, Muffet recommended we try Shine Bakery & Cafe. She's been there once before after she won the shopping spree from L'Indochine.

This tray of sweet goodies welcomed us when we got there. Cupcakes and eclairs? I already love this place!

They actually have a small nook on the other side of the restaurant where they showcase and sell their pastries separately. When we had cupcakes and eclairs to go, I was curious why on the paper bag it said Gourmandise Patisserie.

With a little research, I found out that Shine Bakery & Cafe was previously the Gourmandise Patisserie, a desserts spot known for their eclairs and other pastries (which was located in Serendra). The shop closed and was given a new name and other items were added to the menu. The restaurant was actually named after Chef Sunshine Puey Pengson, Chef Rob Pengson's wife.

The place had that light, playful vibe. A little dainty because of the pastel colors but like a super toned down version of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. The interior had these little details that made it super fun. Like the striped pipes (candy cane inspired?) that connect these small glass encased boxes that contain trinkets and memorabilias, I guess, and some pops of color here and there. It's a visual treat to both young and adult guests.

This one's super cool.
Norman was super pleasant, he guided us through their menu and answered all our queries regarding their food.

On the table:

Chicken Adobo (PhP 388)
It's as if they're reading my mind when my order arrived! Chicken thigh and legs! Though I skipped reading the part in the menu where it mentioned that the serving included three pieces of chicken (I can barely finish two!) I ordered this because honestly, who could mess up Adobo? It's either it tastes like the usual Adobo at home or you tweak it a bit to make it better. And I'm not really in an adventurous mode that day to try something new. Verdict? It was really good. Visually, it had a modern twist (pickled red radish, carrots and basil) but that doesn't really change the fact that it was really good. It had that same homey feel to eat with every bite, and I loved the sour kick of the pickled veggies. The brown rice was a healthy alternative too. More protein, less carbs!

Smoked Salmon Alfredo (PhP 390)
Ian's pick because he is still not over his salmon-craving phase. Creamy? Check. Generous chunks of salmon? Check. Taste? I found it to be quite on the bland side, I hope they could turn up the flavors higher.

Fondue Burger (PhP 388)
Muffet chose this one. She told me that overall, it tastes good but it could be less greasy. I personally think that the meat was really tasty and juicy. Well, it was a tasty and juicy mess (I meant that as a good thing. Haha.) She added that the greens on the side was just okay and there's nothing special to it. Props to the uber tender meat and generous cheddar Mornay sauce, but she said she's had better.

Salted Caramel Cupcake (PhP 78) and Red Velvet Cupcake (PhP 95)
I thought the Red Velvet Cupcake was okay compared to others. Okay but nothing exciting about it. The cupcake base was a bit crumbly and there was nothing exceptional with the cream cheese frosting on top. I loved the cute macaron accent on top of the Salted Caramel Cupcake but Muffet said it was a tad bit too sweet for her taste. But I would still like to try their other offerings!

Sure, there were some hits and misses with the wide selection offered by Shine Bakery & Cafe. They're still in soft opening so I'm sure there will be improvements and enhancements once we try it again in the future. We were also thrilled to see Chef Rob actually preparing the meals!

People who loved Gourmandise Patisserie need not to be sad anymore, Chef Sunshine and Chef Rob certainly made something better out of it!
